Mikpunt Nuus

My email list of residents in Mikpunt was forwarded to CAPTAIN GERHARD NIEMAND SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE SERVICE TELEPHONE: 021 980 5500 E-MAIL: KRAAIFONTEINCOMM@SAPS.ORG.ZA as he deals with the public relations and he will, when necessary inform us via email of crime in the area or even warn us about criminals on the loose. If there is anything that you as a resident need to get on the agenda of this forum please contact me.

Joostenberg Vlakte opened up a Face book account; there the whole community speaks about their concerns and problems. They also established a neighbourhood watch because of ongoing crime in there area; this was done with the help of the Police. In the first week they arrested 2 suspects involving in housebreaking that was part of a bigger gang. I will open a page for us, if you want to be part of it send me your e-mail addresses.

Tracey I will speak to someone with more knowledge about trees and next month hopefully we can discus a tree that can work for you and your horses.

Gigi thank you for the kind words

I am back in a Florist where I belong. I am co-owner and Manager of Flowers by Estelle in Durbanville.

Snake Rescue April 2010

Snakes Rescue

When you need help with a snake, feel free to phone Derek or Jacques to remove the snake from your property, free of charge! They will take the snake to a safe place, away from residential properties and free it again. Our aim is to get people not to kill snakes; most people kill it just because it’s a snake and might be harmful to humans. Unfortunately we cannot always be available to come and help with snakes, as Derek is not in Mikpunt during daytime anymore .021 971 1237 or 072879 9911

I am not even sure I mentioned all the snakes that’s been rescued, there were so many. I must say it stays a great concern to us to hear people telling the stories of killing snakes quite often. What concerns me is you do not get a Cape cobra that is 1.8, 2, or 2.5 meters they only grow up to 1.2 meters; this would have been a world record snake. Most of those snakes are mollies harmless to humans; they catch mice and other rodents good for the environment. The other poor snake that gets mistaken is the common egg eater, this poor snake has been killed as a Puff adder several times, the puff adder is thicker shorter and its head is totally different from the egg eater. And again the Puff adder don’t grow to 1,8 meter.

Good advice if you have a snake in your house or yard and want someone to remove it, throw a heavy blanket or cloth on it, it will feel save and stay there until someone can remove it. They love dark warm places. They don’t know they are not welcome, normally then are on the hunt for food. We mostly find/ rescue them from plots that got animals or birds, and there is plenty of food for them to eat.

If you see a snake in your yard and want us to come and catch it put something like a card box x or cloth or blanket so that it can crawl under it, it is no use calling us if it went into a hole or under the house or under some big heavy piles of rubble or wood. Because 9 times out of ten, we can’t find it again and you will most probably not see it again.

Ducks- Mallard invasive species

WILD LIVE CORNER

This Month we are looking at the Ducks in our area

Accordingly to the Sasol Bird book the following ducks are found in the Western Cape

Whitebacked Duck (Witrug eend)

Southern Pochard (Bruineend)

Maccoa Duck (Bloubek-eend)

Yellowbilled Duck (Geelbekeend)

African Black Duck (Swarteend)

Cape Shoveller (Kaapse slopeend)

Cape Teal (Teeleend)

Redbilled Teal (Rooibekeend

Hottentot Teal (Gevlekte eend)

I‘ve spotted quite a lot of these birds in our area either in the river, on dams and ponds (panne water) after the winter rains. The Yellow billed is a common site here on our river you can easily recognise them by their beek being Yellow with a black mark on it.

This is copied from Cape Nature’s website

Mallard

This is the mallard duck, an invasive species posing a serious threat to the indigenous yellow-billed duck. (Female left, male right). Yellow-billed duck (note brownish-black legs). Mallard-yellow-billed hybrid.

Cape Nature calls on the public, particularly those living in the vicinity of lakes, rivers and dams, to report the presence of these alien birds to their nearest nature conservation office.

The mallard is the ancestor of the domestic duck and is originally from the northern hemisphere. It crossbreeds easily with the indigenous yellow-billed duck and the progeny is fertile. As a result, the survival of the yellow-billed duck, a protected species, is threatened.

Although control measures have been applied for several years, a considerable number of mallard still occur in the southwestern and eastern Cape. Registered zoos may keep them, but this concession does not apply to the general public.

The male has a metallic green head for the greater part of the year, a white ring around the neck and tail feathers curling upwards. This colorful appearance, when breeding, makes them easily distinguishable from most breeds of domestic duck. However, in late summer when they are not breeding, the males and young birds resemble the females - brown, with darker spots and stripes or streaks. Domestic ducks on the other hand occur in a variety of colours combinations, are mostly more heavily built and are more erect. The mallard's ability to fly distinguishes it from most domestic ducks, which can either not fly at all or fly poorly.

Information on the unauthorized keeping of mallard, or on mallard that occur in nature, should be reported to the nearest nature conservation office.
Your co-operation will be greatly appreciated.

Please do not protect these birds. They threaten the survival of the indigenous yellow-billed duck!

Celtis Africana White stinkwood, Witstinkhout

Jong bome groei redelik vinnig, so 1-2 meter per jaar.

Jong boompie in my tuin geplant as ‘n saailing, so 2 jaar terug.

A Little bit more green

This is a plant growing in our area and a lot of people think it’s a weed as they mistake it with the “Kasterolie boom”.

This one is indigenous and an amazing plant.

Meliantus Major, Honey flower, Touch-me-not, Kruidjie–roer-my-nie

A large bushy shrub with bamboo-like stems and large, bluish-green compound leaves. This plant is grown for its luxuriant, ornamental, drooping leaves. They are up to 750mm long, compound and the leaflets have a strong unpleasant smell when bruised, hence one of the common names, touch-me-not. The rusty-red flowers appear in large spikes and are followed by “inflated” fruits. This is a vigorous and hardy plant that will shoot rapidly after winter if scorched by frost. The generic name comes from Greek meli, honey, and anthos, flower, referring to the surprisingly large quantities of nectar they produce. It has a widespread distribution.

This is a fast growing plant that suites to a variety of growing conditions. Once established, it will survive long periods of drought. Plant in a sunny place where the bluish green foliage and inflorescences can be seen. Water generously and regularly. Propagates easily from seed or rooted cuttings

Mikpunt Meerkat July 2009

Mikpunt Nuus

Surely by now about everyone in Mikpunt knows about the tented camp for the Fifa World Cup next year. Well, for those of you that might not know about it, Mrs. Kieswetter of Erf 120/48 Wild Plum Road is planning to have a tented camp for next year’s World Cup. According to their website there will be 144 tents, with facilities like an ablution, tented entertainment area , office and tourism center, commercial center, parking area and pick-up zone.

Most residents that are aware of this weighed up the pros and cons about the camp. Some for, and some against it but, just about everybody had something to say about the impact on our road.  For more info visit their website.

Mikpunt Greetings

Hallo dear friend of the Ray of Sunshine House

Another month has come & gone. All is well in our home and we have had one new addition to our family. 2 month old Zadene was brought to our home at 02h50 on Saturday 27 June. He is so cute and has already settled in quite nicely.

This month was the first month without my car and it has been an extremely difficult month. I just could get everywhere I needed to be, taking the little ones to the clinic or for supervised parental visits has become very difficult, if not almost impossible.

It was also a month of many very special blessings. Firstly I would like to thank our friends from Germany - Dr Frank & Ute Broehl for their continuous support and the huge shipment of clothing, toys, nappies & baby toiletries, also to OKE for bringing the shipment here at their costs. Ute has also send a large amount of wedding dresses & evening dresses which we are going to use to start a small bridal hire business, thus creating 1) a job for someone & 2) continuous income for our home. THANK YOU!

To Nerine, the staff & Management of Forward Slash a HUGE thank you for the HUGE AWESOME blessing of clothing, toiletries, nappies & groceries. Words can't really express our gratitude. To Sheila, Ilse, Andri & Nico thank you for your financial support, without it our task would be so much harder to do.

Our home is currently filled to capacity with 11 children. It does get a bit chaotic, especially during the rainy days, but it is also a blessing to know that we can impact these children's lives & ultimately also their children etc. We are excited to celebrate Joshua & Thandi's birthdays in July and I really want to thank them because they sacrifice so much in order to help other less fortunate children. God really blessed me with special children Chloe & Joshua really takes every child that comes into our home and make them part off our family, and even though they know that they could have had so much more & better quality off life, they wholeheartedly support our work with the children and so wonderfully share their parents with these little ones that doesn't have. We will also celebrate little Marvin's birthday before he goes back after the school holidays, as he will not be with us for his birthday. (in August).  Our holiday plans had to be put aside as there is no car to take the kids out on outings, but we do believe that this is only a season and that soon we will be able to carry on as planned.

Again thank you so much to all off you that carry us in your prayers.

I would also like to thank every single one who made my birthday so special on this past Monday. It was so nice to be treated & blessed.

Be blessed and be a blessing!

Rescues of the last month

Bitis Arietans - Puff adder, Pofadder

A large, sluggish, thick-bodied snake that rarely exceeds a metre in length. Colouration is varied and ranges from dull grey with barely discernable markings through to light brown with yellow and white chevron markings.

Responsible for many bites as this snake relies on its camouflage for protection and does not move off readily when approached. Thus it is often stepped upon.

The venom is potently cytotoxic and a bite from it is a fairly serious medical emergency. It may take hours before symptoms start to develop.

Pressure bandage and transport patient to the nearest large medical facility.

Nog 'n bietjie groen

Aristea Ecklonii

Blue stars, Blousterre,

Kweking

Portulacaria afra

Spekboom, Porkbush, Elephant’s Foot, iGqwanitsha

On this stage the Spekboom is probably the most famous plant worldwide. The Spekboom is the plant that uses the most carbon dioxide on the whole planet. Its the best plant ever to help the fight against global warming.

In Baviaans Kloof a world heritage site, scientist and farmers are involved in re-establishing the Spekboom back in its natural habitat.

Global warming is a thread to every living bean on this planet, do your bid for the planet plant a Spekboom today.

Description and Uses

Most attractive in full bloom when it is coved in a mass of soft pink blooms It flowers in  summer time and is followed by pink fruits. . In nature this evergreen shrub grows 4 m high and almost as wide. The Spekboom has succulent glossy red-brown trunk and bears a dense crown of succulent leaves and stems. The nectar-rich flowers lure many insects (this is an excellent bee tree, which in turn attracts insectivorous birds.  In times of drought it provides excellent fodder for stock and game.

Larvae of the Diadem butterfly feed on Portulacaria species; the Zulus eat the leaves raw in famine times. In Mozambique breastfeeding mothers eat the leaves to increase their milk supply.

Cultivation

Propagate it from cuttings, which must be kept fairly dry to prevent rot. Plant them in coarse river sand and add compost. Plant them in full sun, they make excellent hedges, for this, plant them close to each other. They grow fairly fast. The Spekboom can also be planted in a container on a sunny patio just remember to water the container. It makes a beautiful bonsai. Although in Afrikaans it’s called a Spekboom it is actually a shrub.

I know the Spekboom do well in Mikpunt although we got clay soil. I got some cuttings from Avril a while ago and even with all the water they are still ok. Mark has some amazing big and beautiful ones that must have been planted years ago. So now you know who to make friends with to get some cuttings.

UIT DIE SPOOKHUIS……..

Well, what a month…strange weather an all or not, I suppose it is winter…but winter doesn’t stop all the action that goes on here, what we can’t do outdoors we certainly do indoors, at least most of us, except when it comes to my husband, Mike and his trusty sidekick Leopoldt, they still tend to do things outdoors…..Aahh you guessed it a river expedition again, this time I myself give the title IDIOT of the month to Mike as, yep he got stuck, and with great glee Leopoldt had the last laugh, ha ha, he got his own back on Mike…Well done now can we leave it there, its getting expensive.  Not all was lost however Klipheuwel has an angel, in the form of Mario, who was such a blessing and pulled Mike out the next morning, thank goodness the river didn’t rise, Thank you Mario so much.

It doesn’t stop there though we here in Klipheuwel have a true idol….namely PIETER KOEKEMOER well done on your great achievement of getting your music overseas and in the European market, what a GREAT ACHIEVEMENT…I take it autographs are in order…We are very proud of you and so is South Africa and we are sure you will be a great ambassador for us…CONGRATULATIONS!!!!! For more information, check last months Tygerburger.

Now indoor news…Pieter went away for a weekend of hunting and done very well, bringing back some really good Rooibok and Kudu, so some good biltong is currently been made,  but my highlight was watching Mario expertly carving these wonderful creatures up with the help of Pieter, what a lot I’ve learnt.  Thank you guys it was quite a learning experience for myself and Mike, it was a privilege for us been part of that…

Well no further am I gonna bore you guys, just keep your eyes open for next  months issue….over and out…….

NEWS FLASH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Firstly a great HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to Pieter and Maryke on their engagement this month, you two certainly make a wonderful couple, it could not have happened to anyone better, and on behalf of Klipheuwel, best wishes for the two of you, and eh for a great party to the upcoming wedding……check this space!!!!!!!

Thank you so much to the Blanckenberg family for scraping the road at their own cost.  It is much appreciated.

Herbs / Medicinal Plants

The information contained within this article merely recounts the traditional uses of specific plants as recorded through history. Always seek advice from a medical practitioner. The Mikpunt Meerkat and its representatives will not be held responsible for the improper use of any plants or documentation provided.

Tropaeolum majus (Tropaeolaceae), Kappertjie

Achillea millefolium(composite) Duisend blad, Nieskruid, Yarrow.

Voorwaar ‘n helende plant

et of nie.
